Water tanks are important civil engineering structures whose design should be safe and economical. Intze tanks are more economical for medium and large capacities. Analysis and design of water tanks of capacities ranging from 200 to 2500 k.l have been considered. The purpose of this research was to develop an interactive software in FORTRAN-77 to design an intze water tank on an IBM PC/XT. This program has been developed in three modules ; container module , analysis of staging module and limit state design of staging module. The limit state design of staging module currently offers design or columns and bracing members only. The design is carried out on no crack basis for the forces obtained from the membrane analysis with and with out continuity correction. The comparison of design of elements of the container by membrane analysis with and with out continuity correction has been made.. The effect of continuity on the cross sectional area of top ring beam , cross sectional area of middle ring beam with balcony , thickness of conical dome thickness of bottom dome at edges , volume of concrete of the container and area of steel to be provided in the elements have been investigated for six capacities of tank ranging between 200 to 2500 k.l. Thumb rules are suggested to compute conical dome thickness and bottom dome thickness at edges. Thumb rules related to capacity of tank and weight of concrete of the container with inner dia of cylindrical wall at top are also suggesteden_US
