Abstract: A chimney, or groups thereof, is a familiar sight in any industry. In the present day of rapid industrialization, tall, slender chimn4ys are being built with the help of advanced technology, to meet anti-pollution requirements. Wind load is the most important load to be considered in the .design of such tall slender structures, of course except where earthquake forces may also need consideration. But in contradiction to importance of the chimenys, very little consideration has been given to these as compared to other structures in general and industrial structures in particular in the past. The work, so far done and recommendations given are purely based on assumptions and experimental observations. Analytically very little attempt has been made to know the true behaviour of the structure till recent years. Neither the conventional shell theories, nor the experimental studies could solve the present day complex chimney problems satisfactorily. The work done, so far is limited to simple . geometries and simple loading conditions. The present work is an attempt to overcome these deficiencies and find an alternative solution which can give better, satisfactory and more realistic results.
