dc.description.abstractGround water is one of the earth's most widely distributed and most important resources. It forms a crucial part of the total water requirement of man. The strata properties which control the exploitation of ground water are transmissivity and storage characteristics. The two indicators of transmissivity and storage characteristics of soils are permeability and specific retention. To date various relationship have been proposed to obtain these properties. Permeability has been related to various grain size parameters such as effective diameter, geometric mean, median, standard deviation etc. An alternative procedure was proposed by Sen and Alyatnani (1993) which related permeability to the initial slope and intercept of the grain size distribution curve. This study tries to extend this approach to all types of soils. Specific retention has been related to the textural characteristics of soil by many investigated but to date no explicit relationship has been developed. This study develops an expression relating these two quantities. The study also applies neural networks to simulate the relation between specific. yield and textural characteristic. This relation is in the form of network of nodes connected by weights.en_US
