Abstract: HIGHLY ECONOMICAL FALSE CEILINGS USING NEW CABLE SYSTEMS AND LOCALLY AVAILABLE MATERIALS Valse ceilings have become an indispensable feature in many a modern building on acc:01:1tIt Of aesthetic and comfort considerations and for reduction of air conditioning loads, In conventional construction, false ceilings are supported by wooden grids. The cladding is usually nailed to the grid work. In this dissertation the possibilities of using cable systems fabricated out of small diameter cables for supporting temporary false ceilings have been explored. Chapter 2 of the writeup is devoted to a survey of the possibilities and potential of cable 'systems per se, without going into their analysis and design as such. In the third chapter an effort has been made to devise . a false ceiling system using cable trusses and locally available materials. During design it was found that the cable forces developed in the main cables for normally encountered room spans were small enough to be taken by MS wires which are freely available. Therefore the design has been done using MS wires. The system was physically erected and tested, and.it was found that the perforMance is satisfactory. . Costs of both, the conventional and the proposed systems have been worked out and compared in chapter 4. It.is found that the cost of the proposed system is less than 20% of that of the conventional system.
