Abstract: Ossein is collagen or albumenoid material which remains after treating bones with dilute hydrochloric acid and employed as a raw material for the production of gelatin and glue. Bones are skeletal material of the .vertebrates and having potential of getting useful products after . processing, which are beneficial for the mankind like-bone meal, bone char, bone ash, bone oil, ossein, gelatin, glue, dicalcium phosphate and so on. World gelatin production was believed to be about 115,000 metric tonnes in the year 1981. Today there are several industries in India manufacturing ossein and majority of its production are being exported. Wastewater from ossein industry is characterised by high suspended solids, high BOD and high COD. The discharge of untreated wastewater has deterimental effect on aquatic life. Owing to certain advantages of coagulation an attempt has been made to study the removal of theSe pollutants by chemical coagulation. Wastewater samples were collected from an ossein manufacturing factory located in western U.P. Batch studies were conducted on laboratory scale to find the effectiveness of various coagulants normally used for the treatment of industrial wastewaters. From these studies it was revealed that lime is an economical coagulant removing 76% of SS and 55%. of COD at pH 10.71. However, alum in conjunction with lime gave 75% of SS and 55% of COD at pH 8.00.
