dc.description.abstract | An information system is a collection of technical people, procedures, equipment-computer hardware, software and a data base organised' to develop the information or intelligence required to support the functions of parent or allied organisation. It facilitates availability, accessibility & consistency of data. With reference to transport planning the concept of information system relates to development of methods for manipulating and organising data to enable efficient-access in variety of form. Data base forms the backbone of any transportation study. Building of this data base is not only time-consuming but is a very expensive preposition. In the present study three major data inventories ie land use inventory, travel inventory and transportation facilities inventory have been discussed which account for 80% of the budget of any transportation study. Further attempt has been made to build a data-base for three districts ie Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar and Dehradun for its use in building a comprehensive information system for the region. The data bank prepared includes data on land use & demographic factors, road lengths, expenditure on roads , traffic on SH ' s & igiuR ' s ,passenyers carried & revenue collected by UPSRTC, vehicle growth in the region etc. The task has been accomplished through personal visits to various agencies concerned with the development of the region. ( iv) Further, the data gathered at the block level has been used to rank the blocks according to their relative development based on multistage ranking procedure. The data has also been used to quantify the impact of road length on various socio-economic development indicators in the region throuyh development of regression models. | en_US |
