dc.description.abstractEfforts are being made to reduce or replace the conventional coagulant (aluminium sulphate) due to its increasing cost and reducing availability. Use of polyelectrolytes, ferric chloride, ferric sulphate and sodium aluminate in water treatment are the examples on which literature is available. An attempt has been made to study the use of aluminium chloride as a primary coagulant and its application has been compared with alum as primary coagulant on laboratory scale in wide range of turbidity and pH. The results revealed that aluminium chloride acts as a good coagulant over wide range of turbidity and pH and its requirement is 2.22 to 2.64 times less than that of alum in the optimum pH zone. Turbidity remo-val at the optimum dose of aluminium chloride is al-ways more than that by alum over wide range of turbi-dity and pH.en_US
