Abstract: The development of reinforced earth has provided geotechnical engineers with a material, which when appro-priately employed, can offer substantial economy over conven-tional techniques. For costly structures such as high rise buildings, sea ports, embankments construction, it is necessary to use artificially manufactured polymer reinforcing materials, which are strong, non-degradable, temperature and chemical resistant. These materials include geotextiles, geogrids, geomembranes and geocomposits. There is growing need to develop design and construction technique for these materials with locally available soil. The present work presents the results of laboratory two-dimensional model tests on a surface strip footing (10 cm x 60 cm) resting on homogeneous, medium and dense compacted sand bed reinforced with single layer of geotextile sheet. The effects of depth of reinforced layer from the base of the footing and that of relative density on bearing-capacity and settlement were studied
