Abstract: Study of dynamic behaviour of a process .equipment is essential for designing an efficient control strategy for its control . In case of distillation column , a general dynamic model consists of a large number of differential and algebraic equations. The model is unsuitable for analysis of dynamic behaviour of a train of interconnecting distillation columns as well as for developing efficient control strategy for their control Therefore it is necessary to reduce the dimensionality of this model . The present thesis is an effort in this direction. Most of the reduced order dynamic models of a distillation column, available in literature, have been reviewed and described in detail. Based upon the reduced order model of Cho, Srivastava and Joseph 04,5,31], a dynamic simulation program of the distillation column has been developed and checked for its correctness. In this model, grid points has been selected as zeros of a discrete orthogonal polynomial, Viz. Hahn polynomial, as proposed by Stewart et al. 135]. However, the simulation program could not be used to obtain the dynamic behaviour of a distillation column due to non- availability of complete steady state data..
