Cyclone is probably the most widely used industrial dust collecting device. This thesis presents the algorithms and PC-based computer programs for the analysis and design of this gas cleaning device. First, the exhaustive literature review has been carried out with regards to the mechanism of dust separation from the gas stream, velocity profiles/flow patterns, collection efficiency and pressure drop correlations, effectiveness factor etc.. Then the algorithms and computer programs have been developed for designing the cyclone separator, with and without utilizing the concept of saltation velocity. These programs also predict the cut diameter. The predictions by these computer programs are comparable with the design of existing units. These programs have further been utilized to study and evaluate the performance of six standard configurations of cyclone for a set of industrial exhaust emission data. A computer program has also been developed to carry out the complete cost analysis of the cyclone separator. Based upon realistic industrial cost data, empirical correlations have been developed for estimating the cost of fan and electric motor. Elasticity analysis is important to identify the most sensitive parameters of cyclone, which effects its performance significantly. Therefore a computer program has been developed to carry out the elasticity analysis. In this analysis Leith-Licht efficiency equation and Shepherd-Lapple pressure drop equation have been used.en_US
