Abstract: This dissertation presents the development of a generalised methodology for the design and simulation of aerobic waste water treatment basins, which are sequentially connected. This utilises the Newton-Raphson method to solve the non linear design equations. Based upon this approach,an algorithm has been written and programmed in FORTRAN - 77.This can easily be executed on a personal computer,PC - XT. This computer program has been used to simulate the performance of the existing waste water treatment basins of a Vanaspati industry.Since the data were not available about the quality and quantity of effLuent produced in this industry, therefore its effluent has also been completely characterised. Aerobic waste water treatment basins for treating the effluent of three industries, namely Vanaspati,Sugar, and Distillery, have been designed using the developed program. In case of sugar industry design parameters obtained, are in close aggreement with those provided to the industry by their consultant, while the existing treatment basins of Vanaspati industry are too much overdesigned.Since the effluent data of the distillery have been taken from the literature, therefore no comparison of designed parameters could be made.
