Abstract: Reinforced concrete ground water reservoirs are the most commonly used structures for storing water required for industry and drinking purposes. The wide range of geometri.- cal proportions adopted for the existing rectangular and cylindrical ground water reservoirs, clearly motivates the scope and necessity to minimize the cost of these reservo:Yrs by selecting suitable geometrical dimensions. For a reservoir of given storage capacity there: should be one uniquely defined geometrical proportion to give: the most economical design. This proportion can only be det2rmineci taro ugh optimization of the cost for the structure using the Non-Linear Programming Techniques. In this thesis a rational and simple approach as to how the cost of these reservoirs can be minimized has been developed. The analysis, design and cost evaluation of these structures have been carried out by developing Computer Programs and running the sane on University Computer DECK 2050. In the process of optimiza-tion, parametric study carried out for rectangular water reservoirs leads to the conclusion that for economy, the ratio of height to length of the reservoir should lie between 0.20 and 0.30, and thz. rat io o f bre adth to length o f the reservoir should lie between 0.50 and 0.70. x vi The optimum design for the cost of rectangular water reservoir was carried out using Univariate Method of minimiza-tion and the Quadratic Interpolation method. The Case Studies to achieve economy, parametric study was carried out for rectangular water reservoirs for five ca43acities 'varying from 400 KL o 1200 {L. • The parametric study was also carried out for cylindriCal- water reservoirs fir four capacities ranging from 400 KL to 1300 KL. Thus in all 99 cases for R..C.Ground Water Reservoirs haw been stuo.ied. The final recommend at io ns and guide lines for the economic al design of rectangular and cylindrical reservoirs are given in The last chapter of this thesis. This study of cost for R. C. Ground Water Reservoirs will pro vide guide lines to the de signers and field engineers to se lect suitable dimensions and proportions to place the structure in the minimum cost region. A saving in cost ranging from 6 to '25 percent can be achieved by adopting the dimensions obtained by Non-Line ar programming Te chniques .
