Abstract: Cemented carbide tools have found wide applications in machining but their economic usefulness in the situations involving interrupted cuts has not been fully established. Experience has shown that in such situations a very careful selection of process parameters is essential so as to achieve a satisfactory level of tool performance. This, however, is not easy owing to non-availability of data concerning tool performance in intermittent cutting. The work presented in this thesis reports the results of experimental and theoretical findings on the carbide tool performance whilst executing intermittent cuts. The cutting tests were conducted on a lathe by machining M.S. plates in a special type of workpiece fixture which could provide a constant cutting time ratio and from these tests a comprehensive study of the factors responsible for tool failure and its type was conducted..
