|Abstract:||During the last two decades, considerable amount of research has been done to understand the wear behaviour of cutting tools. This has two basic objectives: (1) to predict precisely the life of the tools under given conditions of cutting and (z) to achieve improvements in tool life values. Attainment of one or both of these objectives would result into reduced manufacturing costs and greater machine utilization. As a result of systematic research in the field of metal cutting, today a large volume of tool life data is available the use of which can help in predicting tool life more or less accurately in a number of cases. Machining of high strength metals by conventional methods has brought to the fore limitations of the existing tool materials. To overcome this a number of unconventional machining methods have come up. Efforts are also continuing to find better tool materials and to improve the performance of existing tool materials by (a) better tool design, (b) softening the work material during cutting by heating or subzero cooling........|
