Keywords: WATER RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT;HIGH HEAD SPILLWAY;PANCHESHWAR DAM;SPILLWAYS
Issue Date: 2005
Abstract: Spillways are structures to pass surplus water safely from the reservoirs constructed on a river valley for various purposes such as power generation, irrigation, . flood control, navigation waterways and for water supply to towns and cities etc. The main objective of a spillway is to pass the flood, in excess of the storage capacity in such a manner that it does not damage the down stream riverside settlements. Spillways, therefore, have following main functions in general: ❖ To pass the floods safely ❖ To protect the down stream settlements ❖ To protect the upstream submergence due to level rise in the reservoir ❖ To regulate the downstream water as per requirements. ❖ To protect the main structure dam from over topping and the down stream erosion.
