Abstract: Realistic prediction of pavement deterioration is a critical component of any pavement management system (PMS) decision making process. Pavement deterioration models predict the deterioration characteristics of the pavement over time and under traffic. The common distresses causing pavement deterioration are cracking, rutting, roughness, potholes, raveling, etc. The latest generation pavement management system utilises Highway Development and Management (HDM-4) models to predict the pavement distress conditions. The HDM-4 is a new international standard model, which can be used in assisting pavement managers to predict economic and technical outcome of possible investment decisions concerning maintenance management of pavements. HDM-4 models are developed on the basis of studies conducted in over 100 developed and developing countries having markedly different technological, climatic and economic environments. Thus, it is necessary to calibrate HDM-4 models to adapt to local conditions. In the present study, calibration of HDM-4 Road Deterioration and Works Effect models is made by comparing the HDM-4 models with the Pavement Performance Study (PPS) models, developed for Indian conditions. To test the efficacy of the calibrated models, calibrated roughness model is validated by comparing observed roughness against base year predicted roughness over the pavement sections by using statistical parameters.
