The design for a dam, which is to be constructed across a stream channel must consider diversion of the stream flow around or through the dam site during the construction period. In the case of important schemes the river will usually have a permanent flow and 'it will thus be necessary to temporarily dry out the zone where the works are to be carried out. The extent of the diversion problem will vary with the size and, flood potential of the river. A diversion problem exists to some extent at all sites except those located off stream. The diversion scheme ranks in importance with other project features and is often a major cost item and therefore, requires intelligent planningen_US
