Mussoorie is located in the hilly region of Uttaranchal. Almost all of the spring sources in the vicinity of Mussoorie have been tapped for water supply. Due to the increasing population, water demand is also increasing. The present system is no longer capable of meeting the water requirement. Since 1967, tapping of Aglar River was already considered for alternative source of water supply, however the project has not been realized due to financial, and other constraints. In this dissertation, study has been carried out to focus on the importance of rainwater as an alternative source. GI S is used in carrying out analysis of geographic data and their attributes. Rainwater is the principal source of water, surface and groundwater are the secondary source. Rainfall of -considerable amount that reaches the ground surface after some amount percolates below it, becomes runoff and discharges into the sea as wastewater. Rainwater can be harvested in area where it falls before discharging into the sea and utilised it to augment the present water requirement. Rainwater harvesting has been practiced since the ancient time, however it was not properly developed because of reliance in surface and groundwater in this modern era. Rainwater harvesting was neglected for many years but it can be a solution to the present problem in water supply. In this study, it involves harvesting from rooftop of buildings to be used for domestic purposes. Provision of necessary filter and disinfection facilities are required to ensure its potability.' In the present study, attempt has been made to identify priority areas for rainwater harvesting and scope of harvesting has been analysed and proposed for future implementation. Layout of rainwater harvesting system and design of water tank along with economic consideration is also incorporated in this dissertation.en_US
