Issue Date: 2001
Abstract: In the present work, dam break flow analysis of Hirakud dam is attempted, due to a hypothetical failure case. For this purpose, a widely adopted computer model `DAMBRK' is used: In this model, complete St. Venant equations in one-dimension is used for channel routing. The numerical solution of the governing equations is performed by an efficient four point Preismann Scheme. The. required data set is prepared on the basis of information collected from various sources, for unavailable data, suitable assumed valued are used. To determine the Manning's roughness (n), a reach located downstream of the study area is used. The outflow hydrograph at the dam site and different locations downstream of dam are presented. A sensitivity analysis is performed to study the effects of breach width, time of breach formation and bed roughness, on the flood wave propagation due to dam break flow. Based on the available topographic information of the study area, a flood inundation map is also prepared.
