Structures located in seismic zone should be capable of resisting substantial deformation. An adequate knowledge of inelastic behavior of the structure is very necessary to accommodate the deformation introduced by the ground motion and to come up with safe and economical design. The objective of the present work is to study the inelastic behavior of reinforced concrete structures. Frames of different height i.e. 6 story,12 story and 20 story representing majority of buildings in India have been selected and different design approach have been considered. The performance of the selected frames has been investigated under nonlinear static (pushover) analysis and non linear dynamic (time history) analysis. It has been seen that incorporating the strong column-weak beam design philosophy in seismic design improves the performance of the frames considerably. Due to its simplicity, professionals are more attracted to non lineaistt i .(NSP) or - pushover analysis. Modeling for such analysis requires the determination of the nonlinear properties of each component in the structure. The response of the structure mainly depends on the assumption made in the modeling proces-;)therefore, care has to be given to get reasonable •result. It has been observed that pa/meters like hinge properties, secondary effect, material modeling, vertical lateral load distribution has considerable effect on he results. Although pushover analysis is simple and requires less effort than non linear time history analysis, it gives conservative result. (r-' iiien_US
