Abstract: | Himalayas are geologically young and comprise of weak sedimentary rocks. The sediment yield from river catchments in this region is very high. Hence the problem of silt erosion of hydro-mechanical components has been found to be quite serious in a number of run-of-river hydro power projects on Himalayan rivers. The under water components of hydraulic turbines operating in silt laden water are reported to have suffered from /". extensive abrasion damages in some of the run-of river schemes. In Himalayan rivers silt conent rises to 15,000 ppm or more during floods. The concentration of particles like quartz (hardness 7 on Mohr's scale) present in the sediment varies from 70 to 90 percent in some rivers..... |
