dc.description.abstract | All reservoirs represent a potential hazard to downstream life and, property. The floodplain at risk in the event of breaching may be extensive being densely populated and of considerable economic importance In 'such, instances dam failure can result in unacceptable loss. Instruments strategically placed within a dam are not by themselves a safeguard against serious incident or failure. But their function is to reveal abnormalities or regressive trends in behaviour, e.g deformation, seepage, settlement, etc., and to provide early warning of distress. Many types of instruments have been developed and a study for the choice of the type of instruments for the type of dam satisfying the requirement shall lead to useful and economic installations. The literature review has been carried `out: The guidelines of Central Water Commission (CWC) India, Indian Standard Codes (IS Codes), ICOLD, USBR, etc., for instrumentation of embankment dams have been studied. | en_US |
