Abstract: | A knowledge of advance, recession, distribution of depth of water and distribution of infiltrated water is required for an optimal design of surface irrigation. One of the important factors is the prediction of the advance distance-time relationship for a given stream size and land surface slope, taking into account the variation in infiltration characteristics of the soil bed. Several mathematical models are in use to determine these design variables. In this dissertation, two approaches i.e. dimensional method and kinematic wave theory have been adopted to simulate the advance phase in border irrigation. First, the behaviour of various fundamental variables on the surface irrigation hydraulics over a porous graded border is studied by dimensional method. An attempt has been made to derive simple mathematical relationships of the fundamental variables involved in_ the water advance phenomenon. The available border irrigation data have been analysed.. Irrigation advance functions relating these dimensionless parameters have been proposed..... |
