Abstract: Applications of Expert System are now a days being felt and implemented. in almost all walks of life. This dissertation is an attempt to develop a rule based expert system for instrumentation in earth & rockfill dams. The data base consists of information collected from various literature and discussion with the experts in the field and the rule base (comprising about 300 roles) derived from the data supplied by them has been implemented by using EXSYS or expert system shell. The system operates in an --advisory mode offering the user solutions pertaining to type, number and location of instruments to be installed in earth & rockfill dams depending on design, material and foundation conditions at a particular site.
