Appropriately, the waterway of a barrage should be decided considering optimal hydraulic performances and cost. On many occasions the hydraulic performance and cost aspect conflict with each other., Some works .regarding cost. aspect was done in the past by some researchers like D.P. Singh (1980). As regards to hydraulic performance,. an attempt was made by N.C. Mohanty' ; (1984) to investigate the sediment transport capacity with• looseness factor. However, in the past no work has been undertaken. encompassing boil the aspects of hydraulic performance and2 economics for ascertaining the optimal waterway of a barrage. In the present work, a maiden attempt has been made to initiate research to develop a methodology to arrive at an optimal waterway with due consideration of hydraulic performance as well as the . cost factor. The hydraulic performance has been represented- by tractive -force criterion to reflect the sediment carrying capacity while the economic part has been' analysed by a costing -exercise for hydraulic design of barrages for looseness factors ranging from 0.8 to 1.7 with permissible afflux limits between 0.3 to 2.0 m. The outcome of this study underlines- the problems and prospects- of evolving a methodology for the .~ designers to determine the optimal waterway which will be a cost-effective design. However, further. research efforts are essential to circumvent, the difficulties in the approach enunciated in this work....en_US
