dc.description.abstractOne of the major problem faced by the hydraulic engineers concerned with the design of irrigation works and hydroelectric schemes is the control of sediment entering the irrigation and power channels. This problem has been encountered since the present canal system, controlled by the head works came into existence in India. The various controlling measures so far adopted are divided into two categories viz. preventive and curative. The controlling measures which are provided before the sediment enters the canals, are known as preventive measure and the controlling measures which are provided after the sediment enters the canals are known as curative measure. The present thesis deals with design of sediment excluder, ejector, settling basin, vortex settling basin, vortex tube and vortex tube sediment extractors along with the sediment transport of both uniform and non-uniform material: The other controlling measures have been only discussed here since no specific design aspects are available so far. For the above purpose a number of literatures have been reviewed. The stepwise procedure for design of above measures have been evolved along with concepts of sediment transport. Due to complex nature of works and for a number of trial and error procedure, computer programs have been developed to have better result in a shorter time.
