Abstract: Scouring being the natural, phenomenon caused by the flow of water in rivers and streams is a problem of continuing interest and importance to hydraulic engineers. Lot of work has been done by many investigators, both analytically and experimentally on the various aspects of the scour problem around spurs, placed in an alluvial channel. Estimation of probable scour around spurs is important for the safety of the structure against failure. To assess, the depth of scour accurately and precisely, the designer needs to carry out controlled laboratory studies as well as analyse the • field observations. More than twenty formulae for prediction of local scour around spurs are available. Most of the formulae are derived on the basis of experiments, on small scale hydraulic models, which surely need to be tested in field conditions, for evaluating their performance and utility to find out maximum scour likely to be developed around spurs
