Abstract: The stress distribution and deformation behaviour are of a great concern to the designers of concrete gravity dams.This study was aimed at investigating stress deformation behaviour of, such dams using a rational approach capable of considering foundation properties also. It was achieved by carrying out 2-dimensional finite element analyses of idealised dam sections of different heights under different foundations conditions. The study was directed to determine the height of dams which could be constructed safe on certain types of foundations.
