Abstract: This thesis covers the history of hydra power development in India, starting from the very first power station at Darjeeling upto the present day projects going on righk'•now, Since this long span covers two very important period, pre-independence and post-independence India, the thesis' is divided into two parts. The first part is "Pre-Independence British Era (1897-1947)" and the second part is "Post-Independence Free India (1-947 onwards)"..The development under the British rule is almost negligible_. Real development start earnestly from the fifties onwards. Since then, to speed up the development process, fAve year` plans were formulated and implemented on war footing.
