Different laboratory tests were performed on undisturbed Dhanori clay including cylindrical compression tests in triaxial apparatus with different drainage condi-tions. Constitutive relationshipswere established from actual stress-strain characteristics as obtained from different cylindrical compression tests. These constitutive relations were then used to predict the pressure settlement behaviour of surface footings resting on this soil. The stresses within the loaded soil mass were obtained using (i) the Boussinesq equations and (ii) the extended Boussinesq equations to account for variation of elastic modulus, E, with depth.en_US
