Abstract: The dissertation under taken is a case study of acute seepage and incipient piping problem man earthen embankment in.. Sri Lanka, named "Mahakanadarawa Dam". The study also discusses the failure of the remedial measures adopted and carried out at site earlier. A workable solution is to be evolved for the embankment considered. The embankment for Mahakanadarawa Reservoir has been built ab.o_ut. 600 years ago during King's t-ime. The maximum height at river section is 50 feet (1,5.2 m). It is an earthen embankment having the casing material of gravelly clay. The upstream and down stream slopes are 1 on 3 and 1 on 2.5 respectively and the top width of the dam is 20 feet (6.1 m).
