Abstract: Vertical expansion of cities has resulted in acute problems in meeting the water demand of the eon-sumers.of common occurrence are the problems of inadequate quantity and pressure in rnultistoreyed buildings. This work addresses itself to the evaluatioi of design practice stipulated in the National Building Code of India with regard to the quantity of water to be made available on each floor and the minimum terminal pressure in multistoreyed buildings with recourse to an experimental study. The results of the investigation show that there is a need for revising the recommendation of the national Building Code with respect to the minimum terminal pressure to achieve an economically feasible design. A terminal pressure of 0.18 kg/cM2 is subserviant for multi store red buildings vis-a-vie 0.35 kg/cm2 stipulated in NBC while sati ofying the quantity requirements on different I floors. 2 A slight change in the design methodology, viz. under designing the ground floor branch and .installs - tion of gate valves on higher floors, results in an equit-able distribution of water on different floors of a multi-storeyed building served by an overhead tank
