The Dams are designed for a useful life period during rich they carry out the designed functions. The designed leased- dead storage is based on assumptions of some specific rate of siltation from the catchment area depending upon a number of factors including the nature and vegetative cover in the catchment area of that project. The accurate assessment of rate of siltation of a reservoir is not always possible as the rate depends on a large number of parameters which cannot be accurately assessed. Hence during its life of the project siltation rate may be far greater than the design assumptions. This many times -leads to reduction in usable reason capacity. In some cases the demand for power, Irrigation,. industrial use or water supply for drinking in-creases due to several compelling reasons which may result in early oL~A6e4i C» of reservoir.....en_US
