Irrigation Development play an important role in upliftment of the people in the underdeveloped countries like Nepal-where 86% of the population are-engaged in agriculture. In views of these facts, Government had placed high priority to agricultural development for which about 1194 of.annua-1 development expenditure of the country -w-a-s--a-1 l ocated , towards irrigation since 1981-82. Out of 23,53,71-5 ha-. total cultivated area, only 37.8% was under irri-gation. However, the fact was that only about 42% of Installed irrigation capacity was reported to be utilised, consequently, the potential benefits from irrigation were not derived. The crop yields were much below the potential yield, due to among other things lack of irrigation facilities, low level of fertilisers consumption, traditional cultivation practices, limited use of HYV seeds, lack of agriculture extension services etc.....en_US
