The study was aimed at carrying out a two-dimensional sequential, non linear analysis by finite element method to study the movement of earth and rockfill dams due to resevoir filling. It also includes the study related to deformations within the dam body at end of construction. Two typical dams section each 100 m high, where considered; one with shell and impervious core, other with transitions introduced inbetween them. For analysing the movements and stresses, a program named FENA2D based on the finite element method, was developed. A provision has been made to consider the dam construction and reservoir filling in stages. Also another program DS2DPT was developed using PLOT88 library functions for plotting the displacements and stresses calculated by the FENA2D program. It has the option for plotting the mesh idealised for analysis and the final deformed shape of the dam. In this, a provision was made to get plots along different verticals and inclined planes within the dam body....en_US
