In 'this dissertation "Expert system for diagnostic analysis of power transformer faults" is described. The expert system suggests the diagnosis and maintenance actions for severe and incipient faults, trouble shooting procedure for other abnormal operating conditions and the maintenance tests required to be performed for a power transformer. Relay indications and certain tests are used for diagnosing the severe faults. The-incipient faults, are diagnosed by the 'analysis_ of dissolved gases in transformer oil and gases accumulated in the buchholz relay. The dissertation is organised in the following manner. The need and importance of development of the expert system is explained in chapter 1. The power transformer failures and their causes are described in chapter 2. Severe faults and protections of power transformers are discussed in chapter 3. Incipient faults, maintenance tests to be performed;and trouble shooting procedure for abnormal operating conditions, o power transformer are discussed in chapter 4. Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems are briefly discussed in chapter 5. Expert System shell- EXSYS is described in chapter 6. The development of knowledge base for the expert system is briefly discussed in chapter 7. The conclusions and further recommendations are presented chapter 8. The references are given after chapter 8. Appendixes are given at the end. Appendixes include user's instruction `;;and information for the expert system, specimen rules etc.en_US
