Abstract: Twelve models of cylindric l shells with edge beams have been tested in the wind tunnel to determine the wind pressure distribution e,n their surfaces. The variables studied are semicentr~a.l angle and radius of shell and height of supporting walls. The wind pressure distributior obtained by wind tunnel testing has been compared with those recommended by various codes of practices. It has been shown that various code provisions are quite inadequate for design purposes. The modified ,wind presst distribution has also been recommended A general computer programme has hen used to analyse the shells under unsymmetrical wind loading. Three shells, one each lying in the category of long, intermedi.~.te and short shells havbeen analysed for the combined eff.ct of dead load and wind load obtained experimentally, and the values r,-f the various stress resultants obtained h~.ve been compared with those obta.lned under dead only, dead load combined with wind load accordin. , t,., IS:875 and with those obtained from dead load and equivalent live load. The effect. of various terms of Fouri series on the stress resultant due to wind load has also been studied. The results are found to converge fast with higher terms of the series.
