Abstract: The Government of India and State Government of Uttar Pradesh have taken long. steps for uplifting the eco-nomic conditions of the inhabitants of U.P. hills. Various socio-economic programmes have been taken by the Government of U.P. like providing drinking water, electricity, better communication and transportation. Much importance is given for supplying electricity to these areas. It is not suitable for supplying electricity to these hilly areas from the existing grid system as large sums of money is required for constructing transmission line in Himalayan mountaneous area. Most of these areas are covered by reserve forests, which is an another barrier for construction of transmission line. So mini and micro hydel projects are given priority for supplying electric power to these remote and isolated areas of U.P. hills. At present there are thirtyone mini hydel and ten micro hydel projects are in operation in, the hills of Uttar Pradesh. And twenty six nos. of mini hydel and four nos. of micro hydel projects are under construction. One hundred and three sites have been selected for mini and micro hydel projects is to be taken up in future.
