Abstract: | Satluj river, originating in the melting snows of Himalayan ranges, towering over Himachal Pradesh, and augmented by rapid runoffs from spasmodic rains over a vast hilly terrain, has a tremendous hydel potential ready to be harnessed in earnest to meet the insatiable power demand of the country. The extremely low per capita consumption of only 221 Kwh per year ( base year - 1984 )for the country as a whole in comparison to per capita consumption of 23,625 Kwh, 15,765 Kwh, 10,658 Kwh, 5,325 Kwh for the developed countries Norway, Canada, USA, erstwhile USSR respectively, is a sufficient index for stressing the need for addition of generation capacity at an accelerated rate. The Northern Region itself shall face a deficit, in peaking and generation capacity, of the order of about 4,600 MW and 25,000 Gwh respectively by the year 1997-98 which shall add to the gravity of the already serious power-position in the region. There is, therefore, an urgent need for addition of generating capacity in the northern region.... |
