Abstract: A river diversion arrangement is essential for any major or medium dam. To facilitate the execution of Podagada Earth Dam a diversion tunnel become necessary for diverting the flow of water during the construction period. The rock is very ideal for tunnelling. As a modern practice this diversion tunnel is planned to be converted in to a depletion tunnel to serve as a permanent. outlet for the purpose of depleting the reservoir in case of distress in Podagada earth dam. This study makes a critical assessment of planning, design and construction practice of depletion tunnel. Modern means of planning and design have been adopted after due consideration..
