Abstract: Penstocks, outlet conduits, tunnels, etc. drawing water from the reservoir, river or canal have to the provided with suitable arrangements to draw the required supply in a satisfactory manner. Structures for this purpose are called 'intakes. The use of water may be for domestic water supply, irrigation, polder generation, flood control, municipal and industrial needs. Choice of intake for a particular situation is governed by topographical and geological features of site and final decision is predominantly influenced by the merits, demerits and comparative economics of different alternatives.
