The present dissertation work, deals with the study of the performance of the stage filter with respect to head loss development, turbidity and bacterial removal efficiency, turbidity catch and clogging pattern. The stage filter is a changed approach towards achieving efficiency and economy in the filtration by alter-ation of the arrangement of media and direction of flow. It is observed that the average turbidity removal efficiency of stage filter is better than for conventional. The quality o'f effluent is of acceptable standards . The lengths of run are longer. The clogging' rate of the stage filter is con-siderably less than that of conventional filter. This is the first work on r'=iage filter. With more modifications in arrangement of media and direction of flow, the stage filter is likely to provide economy in operation and construction cost.en_US
