Abstract: The liquid media MacConkey Broth and Azide Dextrose Broth has been widely used as the standard media for the primary isolation of Coliform and Enter-ococci organism from water respectively since the early part of this century.(20) These media were developed in other countries. The constituents used in these media were selected on the basis of their availability and the cost in other countries, in addition to their effectiveness. The inhi-bitors used are costly and not easily available in this country. Therefore it is necessary to investigate some such inhibitor which are locally available and cheaper than the conventional inhibitors. It was decided to undertake a series of compara-tive trials, with different inhibitors in place of conven-tional inhibitors with a view to find a satisfactory substitute for the conventional inhibitors.
