Abstract: A civilized society is not worthy of its name unless it has an efficient system of its waste disposal. In the absence of such a system, these wastes accumulate in large amounts and create extremely foul conditions which not only impair the aesthetic beauty of the place and cause nuisance to the residents of the locality but also endanger the health and comfort of the people since these wastes are potential carriersb-f-p-athogens. It will not come as a surprise to anyone that the effects of pollution on water resources have received strong recognition over the past few years. The net value of water quality in our water courses is a function of both the benefits resulting from improved water quality and the cost of attaining it Therefore, sewage must be purified or treated before it is disposed of in water courses. In India, where the population is scattered mostly in small groups, and where there is shortage of finances and skilled personnel, a cheap method which does not need very skilled per-sonnel and at the same time is quite efficient, will be ideally suited. From this point of view oxidation ponds, oxidation ditches and package plants are normally recommended. Oxidation ditch which employ the principle of extended aeration gives the most complete biological purification. the system can be used for small and large installations
