The practice of constructing residential buildings in brick masonry in most part of the country has developed, based on the availability of material and on the economic conditions. St ee I and concrete are re le t 1- ve ly costlier and well seasoned timber is not always available. Brick construction, tha re fore is commonly used. But this type of construction suffers very badly during an earthquake . Howe ve r strengthening of. such structure s is expected to safeguard against dam age s adequately.
