Abstract: In recent years the mathematical river models have gained increasing inportance as a tool for studying river management programmes besides simulation of flood propagation. Earlier, most of the mathematical models based on saint Venant equations were primerily conceed with the underlying assumptions of the bed being rigid. This assumption becomes inadequate for flow simulation in any river having significant stream bed variation characteristics. As a means to overcome the above short coming of the rigid bed concept of mathematical river models, Y.H. Chen presented the sediment continuity equation besides modifying the water continuity and momentum equations of unsteady flow. This work of Chen, which can be considered as a major landmark in realm of mathematical river model research, was further highlighted by his -formulation of suitable numerical scheme, which accounts for the difficulties normally encountered with regard to stability, convergence as well as accuracy in the solution of the non - linear unsteady flow equations.
