Issue Date: 1987
Abstract: Electricity is considered to be taking the most vital role for industrialisation of the country. Rapid rise in load demand, disproportionate and hafazard expansion of distribution network results in reduction in system power factor and thereby causing increased power and energy loss, voltage regulation problems and loss of system capacities such as generation, substation and. feeder capacities. One of the method of improving the system condition is by application of reactive power compensation devices. Synchronous .compensators have been widely used in past for. VAR compensation. But the problem of high installation and maintenance cost, slow response time necesitated the use of static compensators. Rapid development of switching technology by use of power thyristors has added much flexibility in controling the compensating devices....
