Abstract: This thesis deals with the analytical and experimental investigation of stresses in a uniformly loaded clamped deep beam. Starting with the basic equations of plane stress , a transcendental diff- erential equation has been derived by applying the boundary conditions at the loaded edges of the beam, The transcendental equation is truncated to a series of finite terms and solved by the technique of matrix progression which in effect handles numerically the boundary value problem. Thus the need to evaluate characteristic roots of the governing differential equation is avoided and the single matrix differential equation is numerically solved to get stresses and disp-lacements directly by using the digital computer. Experimental investigation of a clamped deep beam subjected to uniformly distributed load on one edge was made by using photoelastic method. The experimental results are compared with the analytical results obtained by combining the results of symmetrical and antisymmetrical loading. The results are found to be in good agreement.
