This study deals with the compaction behaviour of lime treated, expansive soil and lime containing expansive soil, which give an erratic relationship between moisture content and dry density, For improving the compaction characteristics of such soils, they have been treated with sodium oxalate (disper-sant) and the resulting compaction behaviour has been reported. The strength of a soil will be very much influenced by the moisture content conditions or in other words compaction conditions and so the strength characteristics of these soils have also been reported. The effect of chemicals such as sodium cxalate and lime on the strength characteristics have also been investigated, With a view to apply the different compaction theories and to judge their validity to treated soils - the permeability and suction characteristics have been investigated. As the experimental investigation has been carried out on expansive soil, the expansive characteristics - swelling and swelling pressure have been studied. The effect of lime and sodium oxalate on swelling and swelling pressure has also been reported,en_US
