Abstract: | In recent years Hyperbolic .Paraboloid shells have become very popular for roof structures of practically any shape on account of their pleasing appearance, economic use of construction materials and ease in construction. It appears that this doubly curved anti-clastic shell was first used 'by Aimond in France in early 1930's to cover wide span aircraft hangars. But it became very popular due to interesting examples of the Mexican architect engineer Felix Candela(27'28) who has used this versatile form for houses, churches, industrial buildings and even foundations. Among spectacular applications are the Phillips Pavilion(148) at the Brussels World Fair (1958) designed by Le-Corbusier, Gantt Aviation Hangar, Texas (150'x150 'with 38' rise, thickness 2.5" to 3.5" ), Grand stand Racing track, Ohio (World's largest shell roof 116'x300', 51' high and 5"thick. It has 5 panels of 116'x60' inverted umbrella roof). ?ecause of the wide-spread use of this type of the shell, much attent-ion has been devoted in the technical literature to the study of. advantages and applications. of Hyper-bolic Paraboloid shells in architectural and struct-ural design. Inspite of this extensive literature |
